Vasiliy Lomachenko takes on George Kambosos in Australia tonight, with the vacant IBF lightweight title heading to the winner.

Devin Haney, previously undisputed at 135lbs, has moved up in weight and there are world titles now up for grabs as a result, with two men previously beaten by the American going head-to-head in Perth this weekend.

Lomachenko, 17-3 in the professional ranks after a sensational amateur career, has been out of the ring since his defeat by Haney a year ago, when many felt the Ukrainian, who broke down in tears after the bout, was unfortunate to lose on points.

The former three-weight world champion now gets a third shot at the IBF lightweight strap, having also fought for it in 2020 when he lost a unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez.

Kambosos then beat Lopez a year later to become world champion himself, before he was comfortably second best in back-to-back undisputed bouts with Haney, despite having home advantage on both occasions.

The 30-year-old (23-2) made his return after those defeats against Briton Maxi Hughes in July last year, edging a majority decision to get his career back on track.

Victory for Lomachenko or Kambosos and they will be back among the elite of the division, but defeat could prove to be the end of the road for whoever does not have their hand lifted this weekend.

The pair had previously agreed to fight in 2022, but Lomachenko decided to stay in his home country with his family after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. have unique styles that, when put in the ring together, could result in an epic clash of titans. The two face off for the IBF lightweight title in Kambosos’ backyard in Australia on May 11.

Lomachenko, 36, was thought to be on his last legs after losing against Teofimo Lopez a few years ago. The former lightweight king erased all doubts by winning three straight, securing a title fight against then-undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney. Though he lost, the Ukrainian looked like his vintage self against Haney, who won via a controversial decision scoring.

Kambosos was the unified lightweight champion after beating Lopez but lost the belts against Haney. Losing a rematch against Haney, both fights being in Australia, Kambosos’ efforts did not do him any favors in his own country. Still, he has tried to rebuild himself back to title contention.

The Ukrainian, widely considered one of the greatest amateur boxers in history, has a near-flawless record at two Olympic gold medals from Beijing 2008 and London 2012. However, his transition to the professional game has been bumpier to date. Nevertheless, his record speaks for itself, and after missing out on Devin Haney’s unified crown last year, he can earn a fraction of vengeance by taking the now-stripped IBF crown from him.

However, he is not the only man in the ring with eyes on the prize. Home nation hero Kambosos wants to earn back the title he lost and then failed to reclaim in a pair of defeats against Haney in 2022, having already regathered the IBO lightweight title.

Elsewhere on the bill, Andrew Moloney will take on Pedro Guevara for the interim WBA super flyweight title. At the same time, Nina Hughes will defend her WBA women’s bantamweight crown against Cherneka Johnson.

Lomachenko, a former multi-weight world champion, last fought 12 months ago, losing a controversial decision against Devin Haney in a failed bid to become undisputed lightweight champion.

That fight followed Haney’s two points victories over Kambosos in the latter’s native Australia in 2022, though “Ferocious” bounced back in July. Kambosos, 30, won a disputed decision against Maxi Hughes, and he will hope for a more convincing win on Saturday.

It will be a stern test for the home fighter, though, as the former unified champion faces a legend in Lomachenko, 36. After Haney vacated the lightweight belts late last year, Loma and Kambosos have a chance to collect one in Perth.

Loma and Kambo have been in each other’s orbits for years, but due to circumstances inside the ring (Vasyl losing to Teofimo Lopez while George was the IBF mandatory) and outside of the ring (Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading to Lomachenko fighting in the conflict), this fight just never materialized. Until now. Kambosos has scored another big name boxer to come Down Under and fight a big fight on his home turf.

Kambosos is coming off a rebound win against Maxi Hughes to claim the IBO lightweight title while Loma hasn’t fought in almost a year since his close loss to Devin Haney as he failed to gain the unified lightweight belts (those being the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles).

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as many view Kambosos to be a Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type boxer. He’s not a knockout artist, he’s not super quick or a defensive wizard. He’s a decent, fairly sound boxer. The problem is that unless Father Time has caught up to Lomachenko, it will take significantly more than just decent fundamentals to topple the former two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Lomachenko has a weaker record, going 17-3 across his career to date. His big wins have come against Jorge Linares and Luke Campbell, while 11 of his wins have been via knockout. Kambosos Jr. boasts a 21-2 record to date, with both losses coming against Devin Haney. Statement victories have included split decision wins over Lee Selby and Teofimo Lopez, the latter of which saw him crowned world champion.
